"Patterns on a surface: the reconciliation of the circle and the square"
This paper discusses the apparently simple problem of filling the space on a surface between a circular and rectangular boundary with a grid or lattice to represent structure or cladding of a building. The problem is partly topological - how many nodes and which node is connected to which by a straight or curved line - and partly geometrical - where should the nodes be positioned? There are a number of criteria, æsthetic, structural and constructional which determine what is a good pattern
